What do Singapore schools do on haze days?
🦦 Worried about recess, PE or CCA when the haze is bad? Here is what the Ministry of Education says, in plain words.
Schools follow MOH's health advice
According to MOE haze management measures, MOE has a school continuity plan. It keeps students and staff well during haze and lets schools take haze measures based on the MOH health advisories for the current air quality. Teachers look out for students who are unwell or have existing lung or heart conditions.
Forecast for planning, hourly reading for the day
The Haze Task Force agency action plans (NEA) says schools use NEA's 24-hour PSI forecast for forward planning and adjust plans during the day based on 1-hour PM2.5 readings. The same document says:
- All classrooms of MOE primary and secondary schools, JCs and Millennia Institute, MOE Kindergartens and Special Education schools have air purifiers.
- Prolonged outdoor or strenuous activities are avoided.
- Students who are unwell or have existing lung or heart conditions are excused from outdoor activities and physical exercise.
What parents should do
- Make sure your child has their medication with them, such as asthma inhalers (MOE).
- If your child reacts badly to haze, MOE says you may arrange to care for them at home.
- Take your child to a doctor if they are unwell.
- Watch for school announcements on official channels such as Parents Gateway. Your school will tell you about its own measures.
After school
Use the same MOH bands for after-school plans. Check the live 1-hour PM2.5 for your region before heading to the playground. If it is high, try the indoor ideas.
Haze Buddy is independent and not affiliated with MOE. School closure decisions are announced only by MOE and schools.
