Haze masks for kids: what does MOH advise?
🦦 Masks are confusing, so here is exactly what the MOH haze advisory says.
For children, follow the advisory first
MOH says the key precaution for children during haze is to follow the haze health advisory and personal guide when planning outdoor activities. Staying indoors or keeping outdoor time short comes before any mask.
Is there a mask made for kids?
MOH notes there are currently no international certification standards for children's masks. It says the AIR+ Smart Mask can be used, only where necessary, by children without heart and lung conditions, provided it keeps a well-fitted seal at all times.
When masks are not needed
- MOH says N95 masks (or equivalent) are not needed for commuting from home to school or work.
- They are not needed indoors.
When masks may help
MOH says people who must be outdoors when the 1-hour PM2.5 is in Band 4 (Very High) may reduce exposure with a well-fitted N95 mask or equivalent. Vulnerable persons may do so at Band 3 (High). MOH lists KN95, FFP2 and KF94 as equivalent to N95. The names reflect different national standards.
Comfort comes first
Anyone who feels discomfort in an N95 or equivalent mask should take a break from it, according to MOH. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with severe lung or heart problems who have trouble breathing should check with a doctor before using one.
Where to buy
MOH says N95 masks or equivalents can generally be found at major pharmacies and supermarkets such as Guardian, Unity/FairPrice and Watsons, and on their online stores.
Haze Buddy is not medical advice. If your child has asthma or another condition, ask your doctor.
